Holcus

Holcus, commonly known as Velvet Grass, is an ornamental Grass that grows wild in Europe and is naturalized in North America. H. lanatus grows 18 to 24 inches high and has soft, downy green leaves. H. mollis 'Albovariegatus' (Variegated Creeping Soft Grass) forms clumps, up to 3 feet high, of evergreen, linear leaves with hairy nodes. They are green striped with white. In the summer, spikes of tiny purplish-white flowers are produced. These plants have an unlimited spread.


Pot Cultivation


Velvet Grass can be grown in regular, moist soil that is well-drained, in sun or partial shade.


Propagation


These Grasses can be increased by lifting and dividing them in the spring.
